The same principle applies to pinhooking partnerships. Rather than
buying one yearling, the group might purchase 25-30 and then have them
trained and readied for the 2-year-old sales.
"Everyone involved in pinhooking knows how risky a business it is,"
says Michael. "Horses grow and change, and everything depends on how that
horse performs that one day at the Under Tack Show. The rewards are great when
they do, but having a small piece of several horses gives the investor a much
better opportunity for profit."
While the Mulligans didn't invent the partnership concept, they are trying
to create a positive environment for both the human and equine halves of the equation
to prosper. "I'm proud of our record and accomplishments to date," says
Michael, "and I really believe this is a great way to introduce new people
to a great business. By spreading the risk and keeping the expenses fixed, our
clients can enjoy participating in the horse business without getting monthly
bills. When you have 17 horses at the track, if one comes up with a problem you’ve
still have 16 running, and you have 17 times the chance of one or more being a
stakes quality horse, which is what everyone strives for.
"We expect to be active at the OBS August, Keeneland September, and the
Fasig-Tipton Maryland Sales." To learn more about how you can become a part of
